In 1694, near Philadelphia, Johannes Kelpius established a group of like- minded believers who called themselves the “woman in the wilderness” community, devoted to the personified Wisdom described in Revelation as a woman who would go forth into the wilderness to await the second coming (compare to Arthur Versluis, “Johannes Kelpius and Pennsylvania Theosophy,” in Wisdom’s Children. Albany, NY: State University of New York Press, 1999, p. 91).
